How we research tenant law
Honestkey™ helps renters make decisions about their housing and money, so the information here has to be right. This page explains where our data comes from, how we keep it accurate, and how to tell us when we get something wrong.

Who produces this information
The tenant-rights guides, lease-clause explanations, and state-law summaries on Honestkey™ are researched and maintained by the Honestkey™ Research Team, the in-house team at Duvoire LLC that builds and audits our legal database. Our content reflects the work of the organization as a whole rather than a single byline.
Honestkey™ is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. We provide plain-English, informational analysis to help you understand your lease and your options. For advice about your specific situation, consult a licensed attorney or your local legal-aid office.
Where our legal information comes from
We build our tenant-rights data from primary sources— each state's landlord-tenant statutes, relevant municipal ordinances, and applicable federal law — not from second-hand summaries. For every rule we state (a security-deposit cap, a late-fee limit, a notice period), we record and link the specific statute it comes from, so you can read the law yourself.
When a lease is scanned, the same standard applies: every flagged issue is tied to a specific statute rather than a general claim that something “might” be a problem. Rent-market figures come from multiple independent data sources, and we say which ones.
How we keep it accurate and current
Landlord-tenant law changes — caps get raised, notice periods change, new ordinances pass. We review our state-law data on an ongoing basis and re-verify figures against the current statute. Content pages show a “Last updated” date so you can see how fresh the information is.
Our analysis runs through multiple checks before a result reaches you, and we treat a wrong figure as a bug to be fixed, not a rounding error. Accuracy of the underlying law matters more to us than how many pages we can publish.
Editorial independence
Our legal information is not for sale. We do not let advertisers, partners, or payment influence what the law says or how we report a tenant's rights. Pricing and product pages are clearly commercial; the tenant-rights, glossary, and clause content is written to be accurate regardless of what it means for our business.
Corrections & feedback
If you spot something that looks wrong or out of date — a deposit cap that changed, a statute citation that's off, a rule that doesn't match your state — please tell us. We'd genuinely rather hear it and fix it.
Email support@honestkey.com with the page and what looks incorrect. When we confirm an error, we correct the data and update the page's “Last updated” date.
